Fort St Angelo
Perched on a promontory at the tip of the Birgu peninsula, the fort has a commanding view of Grand Harbour. Originally called Castrum Maris (castle-by-the-sea), the fortress had two enclosures by 1274. This fort was governed by obedient subjects under the title of Castellan, and the Sicilian overlords saw it as a guarantor of their interests in the Maltese Islands.
